Pulsed Electromagnetic Field (PEMF)Therapy?

An alternative form of pain treatment is gaining momentum in the holistic health community as a drug-free, non-invasive way to approach chronic pain, injuries, and chronic health conditions. Pulsed Electromagnetic Field (PEMF) Therapy utilizes bursts of electromagnetic fields at low frequencies to stimulate cellular function and, thus, promote healing.

If you currently experience pain from an injury or suffer from chronic pain or chronic health conditions such as diabetes and depression, read on to discover an alternative approach to both treating your pain and promoting healing.

What is PEMF?

Utilizing pulses of low-level electromagnetic fields, the goal of PEMF therapy is to stimulate our mitochondria–the “energy powerhouse of the cells”–in an effort to improve cellular function. Although both diet and lifestyle can boost (and likewise hinder) the function of our mitochondria, PEMF therapy is a way to, essentially, “charge” the mitochondria directly. When fully “charged,” our natural healing mechanisms are activated and that energy is directed toward the healing process.

During a therapy session, these low-level pulses travel through the skin and penetrate muscle, tendons, bones, and organs thereby stimulating and encouraging their healing.

Benefits of PEMF Therapy

PEMF has been associated with improving:

  • Physical energy;

  • Depression;

  • Immune function;

  • Promoting sleep;

  • Relief from chronic pain;

  • Inflammation;

  • Detoxification;

  • Bone healthing and density;

  • Circulation; and

  • Promote healing from injuries.

Differences Between PEMFs and EMFs

It is crucial not to confuse “PEMF” with the notoriously dangerous electromagnetic fields (EMFs) emitted by technological devices. The frequency at which EMFs are transmitted is so high it can cause health complications such as DNA damage and cancer. Conversely, the low level of transmission of PEMFs is similar to the frequencies found in nature so our bodies are used to them. Additionally, PEMFs are pulsed, so exposure is limited to between eight and 20 minutes. EMFs can be transmitted for an indefinite period of time.

PEMF Treatments

Holistic practitioners such as chiropractors, massage therapists, and physical therapists may offer PEMF treatment at their offices. Unfortunately, insurance does not cover PEMF therapy, but a single session usually costs $30-60 per session. However, it is likely these practitioners will offer a package of sessions at a discounted rate and it is recommended to do a full course of treatments for optimal results.

Another alternative is to purchase PEMF devices–such as pads, mats, paddles, or rings–for at-home use.
